Williams Esports Continue to Lead 4 Hours in @ the 2024 iRacing Daytona 24

4 hours into the 2024 iRacing Daytona 24 Hour race, and things are slowly a-changing in each of the three classes. The biggest change has been in GTD where the #198 Apex Racing Team car is now out of contention because of an issue with its teammate bump drafting through the Le Mans Chicane, then involved in a further incident with a PGZ LMP2 car an hour later.

Attirition overall continues to be light with only one LMP2 car out of the race, and no GTP retirements since the first hour of the race. In fact, the #54 TC Corse E-Sports W has decided to rejoin the race, working back up to 34th place overall and 18th place in class. In GTD, the attrition was much higher for a point but again cars are heading back onto the track once repairs are complete.

GTP

Williams Esports Playseat maintain the overall lead by 12.5 seconds over DRAGO Racing GTP. Behind there is still a close battle for the final podium position between Williams Esports Fanatec and BMW M Team Redline. All the teams have made a number of driver changes, but there seems to be little variation in strategy. The key test will be in the next couple of hours as we enter ‘happy hour’ and the night time running of the event, to see if cars are better in the cooler conditions.

LMP2

Perhaps the quietest class of the day so far is the LMP2 field. Here, the WSR Esports ButtKicker #23 has continued to lead, by 5.1 seconds over MAG Performance. There are battles remaining in the Top 5, especially between the #81 VRS Coanda Esports car and the #76 SimRC machine. This field normally would be spread out the most due to the fact that they have to navigate and be navigated around traffic, but this seems not to be the case so much. The key will continue to be how they cope when the track gets cooler, and how long the teams can make driver stints last.

GTD

With a SOF of 9800, this is one of the most stacked fields in the history of iRacing. For a long time it was a two horse race with Apex Racing Team leading the way on their alternate strategy, but this changed with the incident between the Stormforce ART #199 and Apex Racing Team #198 down at the Le Mans Chicane. The #199 still has an 11.2 second advantage over the Team Redline #70 car, but this hasn’t grown since the two Apex car incident. Max Verstappen has gotten behind the wheel of the #69 Team Redline Car, and is now charging behind his team mate and offering bump drafting support of his own.
