#ConeLivesMatter & More Daytona Updates to iRacing in Advance of ROAR and Daytona 24H
The 2024 Season 1 Patch 3 Release Notes [2024.01.10.01] for iRacing has been released, providing a number of updates. There’s some re-branding of INDYCAR tyres, some damage model changes to Off-Road Trucks, the requirement to download rookie items to aid in troubleshooting, and some notes about Daytona International Speedway.
Why is the latter important? The iRacing ROAR and iRacing Daytona 24 Hour race are upon us, and as ever there’s the need to filter out any exploits / grey areas that may arise. This is what the release notes have to say.
Daytona International Speedway
- (Road Course) – A variety of turn exit gain-time checkpoints have been loosened slightly.
- (Road Course) – A gain-time checkpoint has been added to the middle of the right-most yellow line where the track meets the apron. A penalty will be administered if half of the car goes over the line.
- (Road Course) – Fixed some issues with tire stacks at Turn 1 where they were slightly larger than they appeared. This fixes some phantom clipping issues.
- (Road Course) – The number of cones has been reduced and they have retreated slightly from the racing line. This is for their safety, not yours.
- (Road Course) – Cone walls at Turn 1 and Turn 3 have been adjusted slightly.
As a broadcaster we have for years highlighted the plight of cones being separated from their families and chucked around racetracks with reckless abandon. Seeing iRacing make this cone fix in particular is music to our ears, and we hope that all cones will survive the upcoming Daytona races and go on to lead happy lives along any interstate roadworks that they so desire.
The rest of the updates are of course more important to non-cone loving sim racers. This should help the constant argument and debates around what is ‘legal’ and allowed in both qualifying and races at Daytona on the road course, not just for the upcoming ROAR and Daytona 24 Hour race, but also for ‘standard official’ races that take place on the service. It could be argued that 80%+ of drivers won’t need to make any changes to their driving lines and approaches, but it may require a little retuning for those who’s been seeking out every last thousandth of a second.
